After Henry VIII built his palace here in the late 15th century he decided to rename the area, then called Shene, after one his favourite rural retreats: Richmond, Yorkshire. It was a prescient gesture. Today’s Richmond is just what it says in the name: a very, very rich mound (on the hill rising up from the Thames). After Kensington & Chelsea, this is the most affluent borough in England. The pretty riverside setting, huge green spaces and stunning period houses have proved an irresistible lure for monied professionals, especially since the City is scarcely half and hour away by the train or tube.
West of the park is Richmond Hill, where Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend’s palatial mansions enjoy an unrivalled, idyllic view over the Thames and the pastures of Surrey. Grassing hill, on the steeper side, are the Terrace Gardens, another pristine enclosure of parterres and winding stone pathways that is currently under restoration.
The road down the hill takes you into the confusingly planed town centre, a hive of shopping, eating and drinking establishment. Tucked way behind George Street is Richmond Green, one of the borough’s proudest assets. The Green has a diminutive adjunct, the Little Green; opposite this Richmond’s most popular cultural venue, its Victorian theatre – the annual Christmas panto is always sell-out.
West of the town centre is the borough’s biggest open space, Richmond park. In fact, it’s London’s largest park. Here you’ll find runners, cyclists, kite fillers, birdwatchers, dog walkers, horse riders, picnickers, families out for a stroll – and drivers on the roads that criss-cross it – but there’s always a bit of empty space somewhere. There are also two golf courses adjoining the park’s western edge.
