Bounded by Northfield Avenue and Boston Road, Hanwell is the proper cousin of Ealing. As you travel west along the Uxbridge Road, from West Ealing to Hanwell to Southall, the area declines in status. Drayton Manor, a much-sought-after secondary school, is here, but it’s all a bit grotty. Uxbridge Road cuts through the middle, providing the usual high-street amenities and Rolls-Royce garage.
Hanwell and Northfields (the next district south) both score highly for green open spaces; there are recreation grounds and sporting clubs galore. Uxbridge Road passes between the West Kensington and City of Westminster cemeteries, final resting place of many West London’s wealthiest residents. For golfers, it’s a short putt to the courses of Osterley Park and the Brent Valley. Brent Lodge Animal centre in Hanwell is a small Zoo, known as a ‘Bunny Park’
The most appealing streets are East of Northfield Avenue in West Ealing. There are some huge detached houses here, notably around Lammas Park, while the south ends of Northfields, overland train stations at Hanwell and West Ealing, and the congested M4.
